A healthy tree adds beauty, shade, and value to your North Jersey property. But when a tree starts to decline, it can quickly become a serious safety hazard — especially during storm season. Here are the warning signs our ISA Certified Arborists look for when deciding whether a tree needs to come down.
1. A Leaning Trunk or Shifting Soil
Most trees lean slightly, but a sudden or worsening lean is a red flag. If you notice cracked or heaving soil around the base, the root system may be failing — a strong indicator that the tree could fall.
2. Dead or Hanging Branches
Large dead limbs (sometimes called “widow-makers”) can drop without warning. If more than a quarter of the canopy is dead, the tree’s health may be beyond recovery.
3. Trunk Damage and Decay
Look for these signs of internal decay that compromise a tree’s structural integrity:
- Deep cracks or splits running down the trunk
- Large cavities or missing bark
- Mushrooms or fungus growing at the base
- Soft, crumbling, or hollow-sounding wood
4. Roots Near Foundations or Utilities
Roots that lift driveways, crack foundations, or grow into sewer and utility lines can cause costly damage. In these cases, removal is often the safest long-term solution.
